One of the first fruits domesticated by humans, the Plum tree is a deciduous tree belonging to the Rosacea (rose) family. There are over 200 varieties of plums deriving from the European and Japanese Plums.
The exact origin of the European Plum is unknown, however, the Japanese Plum originated in China. Plum trees are grown on every continent except Antarctica. The Plum tree is a relatively small tree, growing only to about 18-20 feet and only living about 10-15+ years. Plum trees can be fruit-bearing or simply ornamental.
The plum is a drupe or stone fruit because its fleshy fruit surrounds a single hard pit with a seed inside. The plum itself is used in a variety of consumable products with a plethora of health benefits, especially as a fresh (plum) or dried (prune) natural laxative. Plum tree wood is often used by woodworkers for crafting objects, knife handles, inlays, and similar small projects.
China is the world’s leader in plum production. The Plum tree is significant in Chinese mythology and was often carved on jade, associated with wisdom.
