Boxelder

Boxelder is a species of maple native to North America, specifically the central and eastern United States, and can also be found in Europe, China, and Australia today.

Boxelder trees are typically cultivated for ornamental purposes. Boxelder wood is known for being softer and lighter than all other maples. The heartwood is a grayish to yellowish brown, often with striking reddish pink/raspberry streaks.  Spalted (a term used to describe wood affected by the natural process of fungal attack) boxelder is often highly prized for accent work and woodturning.

The beautiful reddish pink/raspberry stain is produced by the trees natural defenses when wounded and/or by a fungal infection. No worries here though, the fungus does not survive the turning and creation process; it is perfectly safe. Much of this coloring may become a more subdued pink or brown/gray with extended exposure to sunlight.

Native Americans used boxelder wood to make musical instruments (flutes and drums), prayer sticks, and bowls. They also harvested the sap of boxelder to produce a type of maple syrup and made charcoal with the wood to use for body painting during various rituals.
