Cherry

Belonging to the rose family (Rosaceae) of flowering plants, the Cherry tree originates from Europe, Asia (which has the greatest concentration of the species worldwide), and parts of Africa. Cherry trees are typically smaller in tree stature, typically growing up to 35 feet tall in ideal conditions, however, there are some species that can grow to 100+ feet as well.

Cherry tree bark is quite distinguishable from other trees with a silvery-grey smooth bark when young and rough with fissures, called lenticels, serving as pores for the tree to cycles gases and air as it matures. Its leaves are thin oval shapes with serrated edges and it blooms white clusters of flowers or pink flowers on ornamentals.  Cherry tree wood is a choice lumber with a rich appearance, durability, and workability.

The Cherry tree and its fruit have many applications inclusive of medicinal uses, furniture, flooring, cabinets, musical instruments, luxury boat, and yacht interiors.

There is much tradition, folklore, symbolism and spirituality attributed to the Cherry tree. Within Western societal belief systems, it is said that the gift of a Cherry tree will bring favorable fortune and imminent happiness. Symbolically, the Cherry tree carries meanings inclusive of rebirth, life’s fragility, splendor, continuance, new beginnings, family ties, spring, health and nature’s bounty.
