Pecan

Native to Mexico and the southern United States, the Pecan tree is part of the hickory species. The Pecan is the state tree of Texas, but can also be found growing wild in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mexico, Mississippi, Georgia, Oklahoma and other surrounding states. The U.S. produces more than 80 percent of the world’s pecans!

Pecans are actually not considered a nut, but a drupe or stone fruit because it’s a fruit with a single stone or pit surrounded by a husk. The Pecan itself is used in a variety of consumable products with a plethora of health benefits.

The term “pecan” is a Native American word that was used to describe nuts requiring a stone to crack.  Some North American Indians related the Pecan tree to the Great Spirit.

It takes 12 years for a Pecan tree to mature, however, once mature, it can live and stay productive for over 200 years. Pecan trees typically range from 70 – 100 feet. Pecan wood has many uses, but is specifically manufactured for furniture, paneling, and flooring.
