Belonging to the genus Quercus, the Oak has over 600 species with most living over 200 years and some surpassing 1000 years. Native to the Northern hemisphere, Oaks are found in cool to tropical areas in Asia, Europe, North Africa and the Americas.
Oak wood is known for its strength and hardness. It is used in the manufacturing process of drums, flooring, home furnishings, ships, wine industry barrels, timber, firewood and folk medicine just to name a few.
Rich in history, the Oak lends itself to different mythology and legends. The Oak is often referred to as the tree of the Gods, sacred to Zeus, King of the Gods. Oak is also the symbol for an 80th wedding anniversary.
